Time for Q & A On December 15th, a record-breaking 20 state delegates and senators briefed a packed audience as the JCRC and JCCNV hosted the annual Northern Virginia's Legislators' Reception. The JCRC unveiled its advocacy agenda spotlighting religious freedom, environmental protections, and social services.  The lawmakers expressed their solidarity with our agenda and raised key issues of their own. The Legislators' Reception is the first step in preparation for Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day, Wed, Feb 4, 2015. 
gruber6i Colonel (Res.) Dr. Bentzi Gruber spent three days (Nov 3-5, 2014) touring the Greater Washington Area as our Scholar in Residence speaking to more than 700 members of our community exploring the moral and legal aspects of the war on terror including Operation Protective Edge and how the IDF applies ethics in real time during combat making life and death decisions in a matter of seconds. COL Gruber visited the US Naval Academy,Sixth & I Historic Synagogue, the World Bank, Catholic University Law School, Congregation Har Shalom, the JCC of Greater Washington, RAND Corporation and George Mason University.  In each talk COL Gruber took the audience behind the scenes of the IDF’s daily battle to both ensure the country's security and uphold one of the most rigorous military codes of ethics in the world today.
IEF #2 - Northern Virginia In October, November, and December of 2014, The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the Israel Action Center concluded our 2nd Israel Engagement Fellowship. We welcomed 14 participants from all streams of Judaism. This iteration took place in Northern Virginia and the final ceremony took was held at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, DC.
In Their Own Words On September 28, JCRC and Sixth & I joined forces with eight co-sponsoring synagogues and Jewish agencies to host the 2014 DC Candidate Forum before the November Elections. Over 400 individuals registered to hear all the Attorney General candidates discuss their priorities for DC's newest elected office. Following the panel, Mayoral candidates David Catania , Carol Schwartz and Bruce Majors discussed improving DC education and government ethics along with other key initiatives. 
B'nai Shalom of Olney On September 10th, our Israel Action Center presented Israel 101 to teenagers from Synagogue B'nai Shalom of Olney as well as Shaare Tefila Congregation. There were 35 kids 7th-11th grade. We taught Israel 101 and advocacy training. We also had a lone soldier speak to the kids about service in the Israel Defense Forces.

On September 7th, the Israel Action Center participated in Temple Shalom’s community kick off program. Noa Meir and Alexis Schwartz taught a class for middle school students and one for adults titled, "Step Up for Israel." In the class, we discussed information about Israel, current events, and how to advocate for Israel.

Shaare Tefila Event

On August 28th, our Israel Action Center presented on Operation Protective Edge and Israel Advocacy to the to the communities of Shaare Tefila Congregation, Tikvat Israel Congregation and Synagogue B'nai Shalom of Olney. Noa Meir, Director of the Israel Action Center, presented an update on the situation in Israel and strategies on how best to advocate for the Jewish nation. A wonderful crowd attended and we really appreciate all the support.

Other Experts On Hand Thirty five individuals came out for the August 14 2014 Securing Briefing for Northern Virginia Jewish Institutions hosted at Gesher Jewish Day School in Fairfax.  The day included law enforcement and Jewish security expert panels as well as smaller setting workshops and Q&A with area chiefs of police.  JCRC organizes this program every two years in partnership with the ADL and the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. 
Muslims and Jews Together The JCRC participated in a Vigil for Peace sponsored by the Jewish and Muslim congregations in Loudoun County, Virginia.  Religious leaders offered prayers for an end to violence, prayers for lives lost and for the protection of lives.  The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center co-led this non-political evening of prayers and reflections alongside Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation (BCRC) and Congregation Sha'are Shalom.  BCRC and ADAMS congregations maintain a longstanding friendship and share a facility for their worship services.  As ADAMS Interfaith Director Farhanahz Ellis commented, the camraderie and friendships across faiths, inspire all of us to find hope for peace.
cover photo_rally.jpg On July 17th, we welcomed approximately 1,000 members of our Greater Washington community, elected officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Israeli embassy, interfaith and Jewish community religious leaders to stand strong for peace, Israel's right to self-defense, the unbreakable U.S.-Israel partnership, and the people of Israel. The Stand Strong For Israel showed the people of Israel that our entire community supports them.
Teenagers reading the prayer for Israel Twelve hundred community members of all ages gathered together on July 1st at a community-wide Memorial Service at Congregation B'nai Israel in Rockville to honor the lives of Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Frenkel who were kidnapped and murdered as they were hitchhiking a ride home. The service was organized by the JCRC and Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.
Advocating for Themselves JCRC joined the July 1st Northern Virginia Rally for Medicaid Expansion held at the Courthouse Plaza in Arlington County.  Also lending their support were state officials representing Arlington County: State Senator Adam Ebbin and Delegates Rob Krupicka and Alfonso Lopez.  Some of the evening's most cogent speakers wree the uninsured themselves who told of harrowing moments with health issues, but without health insurance.  It is time for Virginia to #closethegap.  Click here to let your legislator know of your support for Medicaid Expansion.
Bring Back Our Boys Rally On June 18th, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, and The Israel Forever Foundation co-sponsored a vigil in front of the Israeli Embassy for our community to show their support for the three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped June 12th - Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gilad Shaer, 16, and Naftali Frenkel, 16.  Over 250 members of the community chanted, waved signs and withstood the brutal heat in front of the Israeli embassy as we welcomed 4 rabbis, a cantor, a Presbyterian minister, Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY), Congressman Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., Ron Dermer.

On June 16th, the JCRC hosted our 2014 Annual Gala at Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah in Potomac, MD. We welcomed 500 members and supporters from our community, elected officials, and our 2014 honorees. Congratulations to the JCRC's 2014 Award winners:

A picture of Drimer began the story This year JCRC arranged more than a dozen Holocaust survivors visits with over 1,500 students at public and private schools, synagogues and other houses of worship to hear their first hand testimony.  On Jun 8 our 2013/2014 speaker series concluded with Marcel and Anya Drimer visiting with all of the eighth graders at J.L. Simpson Middle School in Loudoun County.
Margosis with his escort and a concentration camp liberator In honor of D-Day, Rocky Run Middle School hosts its annual, "The Latest Generation Meets the Greatest Generation," bringing the entire school population together with dozens of veterans, liberators, survivors, and other individuals who witnessed first hand the horrors on the warfront and of the Holocaust and the sacrifices on the homefront.  JCRC is proud to participate in this award winning program each year.
Israel day 7 On Sunday, May 18th, the Israel Action Center hosted booths at both the Rockville, MD and Fairfax, VA Israel Fests put on by the JCC of Greater Washington and JCC of Northern Virginia respectively. We met members of our community and gave out information about the work we do on behalf of Israel. We also enjoyed some delicious Israeli food and music as we came together as a community to celebrate Israel at 66! Click here to view pictures from both events.
The Candidates On Sunday, May 18th, the JCRC and Beth El Hebrew Congregation's Brotherhood hosted the Virginia 8th Congressional District Political Forum. All 7 candidates for the Democratic Primary to succeed Congressman Jim Moran were invited and represented. Candidates participating in the forum were: former Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer, State Senator Adam Ebbin, Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, State Delegate Pat Hope, Virginia Tech Professor Derek Hyra, and radio commentator Mark Levine. Candidate Lavern Chatman was represented by her Campaign Chairman and Republican candidate Micah Edmonds was also in the audience. Over 100 people participated.
The Panel Throughout May, the JCRC offered Virginia Legislative Wrap Ups bringing state delegates and senators to visit with their constituents and report on the accomplishments of the 2014 Virginia General Assembly. They also discussed the remaining responsibility of the legislature - passage of Virginia's biennial budget. The JCRC's Debra Linick also briefed groups about the Jewish community's legislative priorities, our successes and remaining challenges.  Want to host a wrap up for your Jewish institution? Raviv 17 On May 15th the Israel Action Center hosted Dan Raviv of CBS News and Israeli journalist Yossi Melman, two leading experts on Israeli covert intelligence, as they presented an inside look at how Israel defends itself against a wide array of dangers and challenges. Mr. Raviv, an American with decades of experience abroad, and Mr. Melman, an Israeli expert on the Mossad and covert operations discessed Israel's efficacy in sabatoging Iran's nuclear aspirations and whether this sabatoge will continue to be effective. They covered the current state of affairs in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and throughout the greater Middle East as well as the relationship between the U.S. and Israel. On April 27th, the JCRC welcomed over 1,000 community members for our annual Holocaust Commemorations in Maryland and Northern Virginia. In both locations, Holocaust survivors were joined by elected officials, dignitaries, and interfaith leaders. We honored the heroes and martyrs and remembered the victims of the Shoah. In Maryland, Holocaust survivor Nesse Godin gave a moving keynote address urging future generations to continue the survivors pledge of never forgetting. The program in Maryland also featured an inter-generational candle lighting, readings and musical selections by a quartet of musicians which included a Holocaust Survivor. In addition to the keynote address by Professor Allan Lichtman which focused on his acclaimed book, FDR and the Jews, Northern Virginia's commemoration featured works by professional and youth artists, original dance pieces, readings and a community choir.

On Thursday, April 10th, the Israel Action Center hosted an evening discussion with Ambassador Gideon Meir moderated by JTA Washington Bureau Chief Ron Kampeas at Congregation Beth El. Ambassador Meir shared his experiences and knowledge from 45 years of service as an Israeli diplomat. The Ambassador has had a distinguished career from his first post working at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC to his position as Deputy Director General of Media and Public Affairs. His career culminated with his appointment as Ambassador to Italy followed by Director General for Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.For pictures from the evening discussion click here and for pictures from our lunch with the Ambassador click here.

On April 1st and April 2nd the Israel Action center co-sponsored back to back events at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation and the JCC of Nortern Virginia with speaker Israeli Member of Knesset Omer Barlev. As an MK, Barlev sits on the Committee of Foreign and Military Affairs and is the Labor Party's point person on issues of defense and Middle East peace. Barlev has recently published his own political initiative titled "It's In Our Hands." MK Barlev spoke about how to ensure that Israel remains a strong independent and secure Jewish state.

Farewell and Thank YOU Ruth! In preparation for JCRC's Holocaust commemorations in Maryland and Virginia, we organized visits for more than a dozen survivors to provide their first person testimony to more than 1,500 teens, congregations and public schools throughout Greater Washington.  In Northern Virginia, youth were encouraged to create an art exhibit about a "Journey to Survival," inspired by their discussion with area survivors.  View some of that artwork here.  Photos are also available from visits survivors made to Congregations Sha'are Shalom and Beth Emeth as well as the Arlington Career Center, Bishop Ireton and Bishop O'Connell High Schools.  
2014 DC Mayoral Debate all candidates close up On March 27th the JCRC and Sixth & I hosted the last D.C. Mayoral Debate of the Primary Season and one of the largest.  Sixth & I's 800+ sanctuary was filled to capacity as the candidates provided substantive responses to questions ranging from affordable housing to education to tax reform.  Eighteen synagogues, Jewish non-profits and interfaith partners joined with the JCRC and Sixth & I to promote this event.

On March 27, the Israel Action Center and Magen David Sephardic Congregation hosted an event with Dr. Dan Scheuftan, who spoke about Israel's national security issues. Dr. Schueftan is the Director of the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa and this year's Goldman Visiting Professor at the Department of Government at Georgetown University. 


The Israel Action Center and the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington completed our first Israel Engagement Fellowship program on March 5th at the Embassy of Israel. Over the course of 4 evening classes, we welcomed 22 students from Maryland, DC and Virginia across all Jewish denominations – Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist – to engage in authentic conversations about Israel. 

Presenting A "Life Savers" Award Medicaid Expansion is one of the top issues facing the Virginia General Assembly in 2014. The JCRC is part of the Healthcare for All Virginians (HAV) coalition that hosted a Medicaid Expansion Advocacy Day on February 25, 2014. Debbie Linick, the JCRC's Director for DC and Northern Virginia, attended several meetings with Republican State Delegates who have concerns about expansion. The group also handed out "Life Saver" certificates (see picture at left) clarifying the importance and urgency of Medicaid Expansion.  
Prayer at Senate The JCRC lends its support to our Hindu and Indian friends each year at their Indian American Forum for Political Education (IAFPE) Reception in Richmond. On February 24, 2014, IAFPE were greeted by the Lieutenant Governor and more than a dozen legislators during the breakfast hour before the group were welcomed in the State Senate and offered the opening prayer.

The Attorney General & JCRC Leadership

Nearly two hundred Jews from around the Commonwealth converged on Richmond for Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day. Eighty registrants from Northern Virginia visited over 40 of their state Delegates and Senators following well received speeches by Virginia's new Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. The Jewish community spoke out for Medicaid Expansion, funding for the Virginia Israel Advisory Board and the Personal Affairs Management Program. We also alerted legislators to bills that threatened to erode the separation of church and state.
Question and Answer Session

The Israel Action Center hosted a Middle East Forum on February 4th exploring Israel engagement with the next generation. Following a look at the results of the Pew Research Center’s “A Portrait of Jewish Americans” Mr. Alan Cooperman of the Pew Center, Mr. Jonathan Kessler of AIPAC and Ms. Pnina Agenyahu of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washingotn discussed the successes and challenges of national and local organizations as they work to connect young adults with Israel. 

Delegate Rust Presents HB747 DACA for VA DREAMers

The JCRC's Virginia Director, Debbie Linick, joined the Virginia Association of Latino Organizations, several Virginia state university and college representatives, members of chambers of commerce and the interfaith community to offer testimony in suppport of in-state tuition for Virginia high school students, regardless of immigration status.  This 2014 legislation suffered the same fate as the bills presented in 2013.  It was left in the House Appropriations Committee despite having no long term fiscal impact.  JCRC hopes to work with the Northern Virginia bill patrons, Delegates Tom Rust, Alfonso Lopez, and Kaye Kory to pass this legislation next year. 

2014 VA Insiders Briefing Linick The Insiders' Briefing on January 27 prepared activists for Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day.  Experts from the Virginia Non-Profit Roundtable, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Virginia Israel Advisory Board joined JCRC's leadership to present information about Medicaid Expansion, First Amendment freedoms, VIAB and other issues on the agenda.  
 Holocaust Museum Yahrzeit Candle On January 24, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) hosted foreign ambassadors and Holocaust survivors for a candle lighting ceremony in their Hall of Remembrance.  The ceremony was held to commemorate the United Nation’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27) and was attended by more than 200 people.  On this day, sixty-eight years ago, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland where more than a million Jews were murdered between 1940 and 1945.  JCRCGW’s Educational Outreach Associate, Steve Adleberg, chaperoned five survivors from Northern Virginia to this event.
2014 Virginia Inauguration of Governor McAuliffe Soggy weather could not dampen the festivities as Virginia inaugurated its 72nd Governor, Terry McAuliffe, as well as a new Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring.  JCRC's Debbie Linick was one of over 2,000 participants attending the Inaugural Ball on January 18, 2014.  Northern Virginia Rabbi Jack Moline offered a benediction at the ceremony earlier in the day.


 And Chairman Mendelson

For the third year, the JCRC assisted Mayor Gray and the D.C. City Council to organize a Hanukkah celebration at the Wilson Building. Over 70 community members were in attendance alongside the Mayor, Chairman Mendelson and the majority of Council Members. The JCRC joined celebrations at the Embassies of Israel and India and spoke about the significance of Hanukkah at a separate Tree Lighting celebration later in the week at the Wilson Building.   

All Hands On Deck

A record breaking twenty state senators and delegates joined the JCRC at the Northern Virginia Legislators' Reception, hosted in partnership with the JCCNV on December 5th. The JCRC unveiled the Jewish community's 2014 Virginia Legislative Agenda while lawmakers provided a sneak peek at their top priorities. The Virginia General Assembly runs January 8 - March 8. FTC Rally - Ike Leggett

On November 19th, the JCRC and members of our community were joined by elected officials at a rally in front of the FTC to fight agains a proposed merger between the two largest funeral homes in the U.S. Thank you to our community members and elected leaders who came out to support the fight to protect the right to purchase an affordable Jewish funeral


The Panel For Election 2013, the JCRC joined with the Olam Tikvah Men's Club (Oct 27) and Temple Rodef Shalom's Social Action Committee (Oct 30) to offer candidate forums in advance of the November 5th elections.  
Navigating Healthcare.Gov On October 24th, the JCRC and JCCNV joined forces to offer individuals an opportunity to learn about healthcare reform with, "The Affordable Care Act: What YOU NEED To Know."   Our expert speakers guided the audiences through the website and provided an overview of new patient protections and requirements in the law.  A final segment of the program covered projections about the impact on health systems and healthcare macroeconomics before opening up to audience Q & A. 
Staying for a Closer Inspection Over 140 teachers and school administrators attended the Maryland Council for Social Studies (MDCSS) conference held in Annapolis on October 18.  The Virginia Conference of Social Studies Educators (VCSSE) in Roanoke on November 1 was also strongly attended. The JCRC's Education Outreach Associate Steve Adleberg was on hand with resources and materials for teachers to include in their lesson plans as they cover curriculum topics including Jews & Judaism, Israel in the Middle East, and the Holocaust.  
Panelists at Middle East Forum

On October 22, 2013, the Israel Action Center at the JCRC hosted a Middle East Forum on Iran's nuclear threat and implications for the Greater Middle East. Panelists included: Congressman Eliot Engel, 16th District, New York, Ranking Member House Foreign Affairs Committee; Congressman Ted Deutch, 21st District, Florida, Senior Member, House Foreign Affairs Committee; Michael Singh, Managing Director, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy; and Nathan Carleton, Communications DirectorUnited Against Nuclear Iran. They discussed why Iran continues to pose the biggest threat to regional and global security and what can be done to contain this threat.

Middle East Forum:Environmentalism as a Pathway to Peace On October 1, 2013, the JCRC, JCC Greater Washington, and Friends of the Earth Middle East welcomed the Israeli and Palestinian Directors of Friends of the Earth Middle East - Gidon Bromberg, and Nader al-Khateeb - for a Middle East Forum on Environmentalism as a Pathway to Peace. They addressed Israeli, Palestinian, and Jordanian hydro-politics and sustainable regional development which they hope will lead to the creation of necessary conditions for lasting peace in the Middle East. They also discussed how cross border environmental cooperation can build trust and hopefully create ongoing platforms for dialogue and other meaningful exchanges. 
Scholar in Residence - Israeli Embassy Event MK Rabbi Lipman joined the Israel Action Center as our inaugural Scholar in Residence from September 8-12. In  just four short days, he visited four area synagogues, two Jewish Community Centers, met with elected officials, think tank analysts, and the media, visited with college students, and spoke at a program with Christian clergy. The Israel Action Center is proud to have offered our community such a dynamic, positive and hopeful face of Israel for what was a jam-packed week of exciting programs.
63010.jpg Each year Fairfax brings together its middle and high school social studies teachers for a day of training and professional development in late August. The JCRC, as part of its outreach to area school districts, provides resources to schools and teachers on curriculum that addresses Jews, Judaism, Israel and the Middle East, and the Holocaust. The JCRC presented to Fairfax Social Studies teachers at their August 2013 training program.
An Early Viewing The JCRC hosted its first "Teaching the Holocaust: An Educator's Guide." Over two dozen teachers participated in this guided tour prior to opening hours at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.  Secondary and religious school teachers from DC, Maryland, and Virginia debriefed over lunch.  Experienced moderators led small group discussions in the afternoon following the Museum's "First Person Series," which features live interviews with Holocaust survivors.  Follow these links to learn more about the JCRC's Holocaust & Education Resources. 
Counter Terrorism at the UN On July 9th, the JCRC and American Friends of Tel Aviv University held a Lunch and Learn discussion on Counter-Terrorism at the UN: A Legal Insider's Perspective with Dr. David Scharia, the first and only Israeli to ever work as an expert for the United Nations Security Council.
2013 gala chairs.jpg Thank you for making our 75th Year Gala Celebration Truly Memorable! We welcomed over 400 of our friends in celebration of 75 years of Jewish Community Leadership at the JCRC’s Anniversary Gala at Washington Hebrew Congregation on June 13, 2013. The JCRC honored Carol and Gary Berman with the Breslau-Goldman Award; Cindy and Rick Zitelman with the Community Leadership Award and Alan Gross with the Distinguished Service Award.
Survivors Share Their Stories Rocky Run Middle School's award winning "The Latest Generation Meets the Greatest Generation," program is held each year on D-Day (Jun 6th). The JCRC participated in this outstanding event that included over 100 veterans, civilians, Holocaust survivors and other eye witnesses to World War II.  Also participating are veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and other recent conflicts.  For the past 12 years over 1,000 students hear their testimony annually.  Rocky Run retains living testimony and other material from this seminal program through their annual history project which may be viewed at
2013 Annual Meeting The JCRC 2013 Annual Meeting was held on May 30, 2013. We honored our outgoing board members and welcomed the new board members. The meeting featured a screening of the film Food Stamped about one Jewish couple's experience living on food stamps for one week. Rabbi Steve Gutow, CEO of JCPA also shared his thoughts on the importance of supporting food programs for all individuals.
Israel@65 Middle East Forum: Israel@65 happened on May 21, 2013. Two Hundred community members joined Ambassador Dennis Ross, Dr. Kenneth Pollack, and Mr. Barry Bogage to discuss Israel's successes and challenges as she turns 65.
Congressman Wolf at the House

 "Virginia Goes to Washington" happened on April 24, 2013.  Over two dozen Jewish leaders and agency executives from JCA, JFGH, JSSA and the Jewish Federations of Greater Washington, Tidewater and the Virginia Peninsula brought key issues of concern for the Jewish community to Senators Warner and Kaine and Congressmen Connolly, Moran and Wolf.  We advocated in support of: the Older Americans Act, Charitable Tax Deductions, foreign aid to Israel and strengthening sanctions on Iran.

Briefing the Group

 The JCRC's Debbie Linick briefed the JCCNV's Monthly Policy Discussion Group on "The Gun Control Debate."  The discussion covered legislation at the state and national levels and opened to audience comments and opinions. 

Meet the Candidates

The JCRC hosted a D.C. candidates forum preceding the April 23rd Special Election to fill DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson's open at-large City Council seat.  All six candidates: Anita Bond (D-incumbent), Matt Frumin (D), Patrick Mara (R), Perry Redd (Green), Elissa Silverman (D) and Paul Zukerberg.  JCRC also urged D.C. residents to "VOTE YES" on the D.C. Budget Autonomy Initiative.

On April 7, the JCRC hosted its annual Maryland and Virginia Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Commemorations at Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac and the JCC in Northern Virginia. Survivors spoke and were honored, art and artifact exhibits were displayed, candles were lit in memory of the six million, victims' names were read and their memories were cherished, and the community pledged to continue prioritizing remembrance. In Maryland Dr. Walter Reich, of George Washington University provided keynote remarks while George Mason University History and Art History Professor Marion Deshmukh gave a seminar on "Holocaust Art: Then & Now," in Northern Virginia and interviewed two of the artists whose original works were on display. 

Leisure World attendees  The JCRC was proud to support Governor O'Malley and his "common sense" gun control policies at the Marylanders Rally to Prevent Gun Violence.  Despite the bitterly cold work day, almost 100 people from our community joined hundreds of Marylanders rallying for an end to gun violence.  The rally was held at the State House in Annapolis on March 1, 2013.
Israel at 65 The Virginia House of Delegates hosted a Center Aisle Ceremony in honor of Israel's 65th Anniversary of Statehood on February 13.  Resolutions were passed in the House (HJ844) and the Senate (SJ399) thanks to Senators Ebbin and Saslaw and Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn and House Speaker William Howell. The resolutions passed with unanimous consent and included the majority of Delegates and Senators as patrons. The JCRC helped organize a day of visits with elected officials and Jewish leaders that culminated in a reception in the General Assembly building hosted by the Embassy of Israel.  
Senator Karen Montgomery Hears Concerns of Jewish Constituents On February 12, the JCRC hosted its annual Annapolis Advocacy Day. Over 150 Jewish constituents representing eight districts met with state legislators to advocate for an end to the death penalty, stricter gun control, greater market access for kosher wine, and continued funding of Jewish agencies.
A Talent for Talk February 3 marked Super Sunday - the largest annual fundraiser in our local community organized by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.  Before kick off in the Super Bowl, hundreds of Jewish volunteers got on the phones in Rockville,Fairfax and D.C. securing hundreds of thousands of dollars that support Jewish philanthropy throughout our region, our country, Israel and the world.  Each year, JCRC escorts dozens of elected officials, including D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray (left), who praise our efforts and join the call.
Welcoming Governor McDonnell January - The JCRC organized Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day in collaboration with JCRCs in Richmond, Tidewater and Penninsula. Northern Virginia participation is co-sponsored by the American Jewish Committee, B'nai B'rith, Hadassah, JCCNV, the Jewish Federation and Temple Rodef Shalom's Hineinu Environmental Advocacy Group. This year over 130 activist heard briefings from the Governor and Attorney General and launched visits to over 50 state delegates and senators. Learn about our top issues here
Hayfield's Fashion Show Finale

On January 22, 2013, Hayfield Secondary School hosted an "International Night" with funding from the JCRC through our Youth Tolerance Project Competition. The JCRC's Youth Tolerance Project Competition encouraged students to submit ideas for projects that promoted tolerance and understanding in their schools, communities, or beyond.  Project winners were announced at the 2012 Holocaust observances and the high school awardee in Virginia received funds to undertake an International Night at Hayfield Secondary School in Fairfax.  Over a hundred students participated, dozens provided food samplings or table displays.  An additional group of students offered dances and performances from their cultures representing Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America.  Find information about JCRC's upcoming Holocaust educational and commemorative programming a

The Panel

The JCRC's DC Leadership Series continued with a program hosted at Temple Micah and introducing freshman Council Member David Grosso to Micah congregants and representatives from other DC Jewish organizations.  The Council Member has been assigned to a wide breadth of Committees: Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs; Education; Finance & Revenue;Transportation and the Environment; and Health; and addressed his priorities in each of these policy areas.  Overall his main goals on the Council include providing a fresh perspective, especially on issues of school reform and government transparency.


At the Table  JCRC co-sponsored a Hanukkah Celebration with The Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia for senior residents of Hunters Woods Fellowship House on December 10, 2012.  JCRC had helped residents and management create a welcoming atmosphere of mutual respect and is pleased to see this tradition continue.
Dignitaries in the Room JCRC joined with DC Mayor Vincent Gray, Chairman Phil Mendelson and the City Council to host a Hanukkah candlelighting for all District residents and guests on December 12th - the fourth night of the eight day festival of lights.

 Fun with a Jewish Twist Proud to be Jewish in the Public Schools is JCRC's workshop training parents to be best advocates for their K-12 students.  In 2012, Temple Rodef Shalom's Youth Committee hosted the program that included expert speakers from JCRC as well as the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA) and the Partnership for Jewish Life & Learning. 
Dr. Daniel Zisenwine addressed the crowd On October 25, the JCRC hosted a lunchtime talk on the Arab World's perspective on the upcoming US Presidential Election. Dr. Daniel Zisenwine, a Research Fellow at Tel Aviv University's Moshe Dayan Center, led the discussion. Dr. Zisenwine discussed the Arab World as a diverse region rather than a monolithic entity, and talked about the various outlooks of the Saudis, Egyptians, Syrians, and other Arab states.

 On stage, Ron Halber and Allen Breakfast with George Allen: JCRC hosted a meet and greet on Oct 22 with the Virginia Republican candidate for United States Senate - one of the most watched races in the 2012 election season with control of the Senate resting in the balance. 
 Noam Katz Briefing Clergy On October 16, Noam Katz, Minister of Public Diplomacy at the Embassy of Israel discusses the Arab-Israeli conflict with Christian leaders.  JCRC and the American Jewish Committee offer this program for Christian leadership on an annual basis.
Dan Raviv Read Audience Questions to the Debaters On October 10, the JCRC hosted a Presidential Candidate Surrogate Debate, moderated by CBS News Radio Correspondent Dan Raviv, at the JCCNV. Visiting Virginia were Congressman Robert Wexler, representing President Obama's campaign and Under Secretary of Defense Dov Zakheim, representing the campaign of Governor Romney.
Steve Rakitt On September 5, the 40th anniversary of the Munich 11 massacre, over two hundred people came to the JCC in Rockville to join the JCRC, the Embassy of Israel, and many other Jewish community organizations in remembering the 11 members of Israel’s 1972 Olympic delegation.
The Panel The JCRC's DC Leadership Series hosted District City Council Member Muriel Bowser with her new Temple Sinai constituents from Ward 4. 
At the Table  The JCRC's DC Leadership Series continued in June hosting Mayor Gray's Chief of Staff, Christopher Murphy.  Representatives of DC Jewish institutions listened to upcoming initiatives of the Mayor and shared their top concerns.
JCRC 2012 Annual Gala The JCRC was proud to honor Leslie & Sam Kaplan with the Breslau-Goldman Award, Allen Kronstadt with the Community Service Award and Vivian Bass with the Distinguished Service Award at the 2012 Annual Gala.  Thank you to the over 400 friends who joined us in celebrating their achievements. 
Lighting One Candle  The 2012 JCRC Yom Ha'Shoah Holocasut Remembrance day was held at Ohr Kodesh in Maryland and Gesher Jewish Day School in Virginia.  The day includes a; Dor L’ Dor Youth-Survivor Program, B'nai B'rith's "Unto Every Person There Is A Name" reading, and the Community Commemoration of the victims, survivors, and heroes of the Holocaust.  In Maryland keynote remarks were provided by Michael Berenbaum, renowned scholar, rabbi, writer and film-maker who specializes in the study of the memorialization of the Holocaust.  In Virginia, Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat gave a first hand accounting of restitution negotiations with European allies and companies that provided some belated justice to survivors and their heirs in the 1990s through today.
Fairfax County Proclaims Holocaust Remembrance At Fairfax County's April 10th meeting, the Board of Supervisors proclaimed Holocaust remembrance and noted the Northern Virginia Observance scheduled for April 22nd.  On hand were Congressman Gerry Connolly and State Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn.

        2012 Good Deeds Day with Supervisor Cook  March - JCRC invited state and local elected officials to participate in "Good Deeds Day," where hundreds of members of the Jewish community participated in community service projects at over 60 sites throughout Greater Washington.  This is the Jewish Federation's first year participating in this international event started in Israel in 2007.  At left, Supervisor John Cook joins Gesher Jewish Day School President Miriam Berkowitz for on-site events.
VA Security Briefing 2012 February - March: JCRC and the Jewish Federation joined forces with the Anti-Defamation League, the Secure Communities Network and area law enforcement to offer security briefings for Jewish institutions at D.C., Maryland and Virginia locations.
2012 JCRC MD Advocacy Day February- Nearly 350 JCRC Maryland constituents come out to Annapolis and support the Jewish Community's legislative agenda for 2012 at the MD Adovacacy Day. Adovacy meetings with legislators are followed by a reception at the Miller Senate Office building.
Director Tregoning & the Group February - JCRC continued its Leadership Series that brings together representatives from DC Jewish institutions with political and community leaders in the District.  On February 6 D.C. Director of Planning Harriet Tregoning and Assistant Director for Historic Preservation David Maloney overviewed their current initiatives for a group including representatives of the Jewish Historical Society, Jewish United for Justice, the DC Jewish Community Center and JCRC.
Governor McDonnell Addresses Jewish Advocacy Day February - Nearly 200 Jewish activists arrived in Richmond on Virginia Jewish Advocacy Day, February 1st.  The group heard keynote addresses by the Governor, Lt Governor and Attorney General, as well as invocations at the General Assembly from Northern Virginia Rabbis.  With your help, we brought top concerns of the statewide Jewish community to dozens of State Senators and Delegates throughout the Commonwealth.

2011 DC Official Tree Lighting Ceremony


JCRC Staff and Board Members join Hunters Woods residents for a Hanukkah Celebration December 22nd, join Mayor Gray and the D.C. Council at its Winter Holiday celebration, and lead several days of Hanukkah candle lighting at the invitation of DC Mayor Vincent Gray, Chairman Kwame Brown and the Executive Office of the City Council.

Jewish Chaplains' Memorial


At various ceremonies throughout September & October, JCRC participated in events commemorating the new Jewish military chaplain's memorial at Arlington Cemetery.  The headstone will remember 14 fallen Jewish chaplains of past wars and will stand among memorials to Catholic and Protestant chaplains.

Jewish leaders on Capitol Hill


JCRC's Day on Capitol Hill brought over 60 leaders and activists to meetings with Senators Cardin and Mikulski, aides to Senators Warner and Webb and 7 Congressmembers or their staffs from DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.  Our group championed charitable giving, Medicaid and a strong U.S.-Israel relationship.  We also warned of the growing threat from Iran and urged action.

JCRC celebrates Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) each year by sponsoring a uniquely selected exhibit from the Jewish Heritage Society of Greater Washington.  In this 150th anniversary year of President Lincoln's Inauguration, we hosted the original JHS exhibit "Jews in Mr. Lincoln's Washington," at the D.C. Wilson Building.

About forty elected officials –including Maryland’s Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown  and Attorney General Doug Gansler- joined many interfaith leaders and hundreds of community members at JCRC's ANNUAL GALA as Dennis Berman and The Kramer Family were awarded the coveted 2011 Breslau Goldman Award and Esther Newman received this year’s Community Leadership Award.  Each of this year’s honorees is a truly outstanding Jewish leader.

The Yom Ha'Shoah Candle Lighting Ceremony


Annual Yom Ha'Shoah (Holocaust) Commemorations in Maryland and Virginia organized by the JCRC reflect upon "Closing Doors: Immigration Policy During The Holocaust Years."  The programs include a Dor L' Dor (Generation to Generation) Holocaust / Teen Discussion hour, art exhibits, a community choir, and new in 2011, an essay writing competition.
